Over the course of 2024 a momentum is building - Empowering women in photography of all genres is becoming at the forefront of the photography community.
In October 2024, we created a dedicated space on Instagram for women in seascape photography, a place where those who share a passion for this specific genre could come together, share their work and connect as a community. The aim has always been simple: to encourage, support and give visibility to women who photograph the coast, creating a platform where their voices and images can be seen and valued.
The Idea – We are coastal photographers, most at home on a beach or standing beside a stretch of rugged coastline. Being close to the sea is what inspires us, motivates us and keeps us heading out with our cameras, whatever the weather. The initial idea for Women in Seascape Photography came in January 2024, shortly after we relocated to the Isle of Lewis. Moving to the island was driven by two things: a desire for a better work–life balance and the hope of creating more time to focus on photography. Lewis has an incredible creative community and an un spoilt, beautiful coastline. Lewis and Harris captured our hearts quickly, the landscape, the light, the sense of space, and it continues to inspire us every day, especially in our love of seascape photography.
We wanted to create a platform to share our love of the sea & coast. Quite naturally the Isle of Lewis lends itself to “Lets encourage women in seascape” The coast is ever changing, high tide, low tide, shifting weather, soft light or wild Atlantic swell. There’s always something to photograph, from intricate abstracts and long exposures to roaring waves or the stillness of a calm sea at sunset. That’s what makes seascape photography such an engaging and rewarding genre, and it’s why we’re so passionate about encouraging others to be part of it.
What we do - We encourage women on Instagram to share their photographs inspired by the sea and coast by tagging our account. We welcome all forms of creativity, ICM, long exposures, abstracts, aerial work, astro, multiple exposures and everything in between. Each day we select one image to feature on our main feed and encourage the community to support the photographer’s work. We also spotlight many of the other images shared with us in our stories, creating a positive, encouraging space that recognises and celebrates multiple female photographers every single day.
Within the Women in Seascape Photography Community, one of the most meaningful parts of what we do is our Print of the Month feature a simple idea that has become a powerful source of encouragement. Each month, one image shared in the group is selected to be professionally printed on PermaJet fine‑art paper and posted to the photographer.
PermaJet’s support makes this possible, and it matters more than people might realise. Many women in our community are still building confidence, still finding their voice, still learning to see their work as something worthy of being held in the hand rather than left on a screen. Having a print arrive through the letterbox, beautifully produced, tangible, and treated with care is often the first moment someone truly sees their own photograph as a piece of art.

That sense of encouragement and visibility doesn’t end with the Print of the Month. Over the last two years, NiSi Filters have helped us take that same spirit of recognition onto a much bigger stage: The Photography Show. As the largest photography event in the UK, it’s a place where the industry gathers, where trends are shaped, and where thousands of photographers come to be inspired.
For our Women in Seascape Photography Community, being represented there has been transformative. NiSi’s support has given us the opportunity to highlight the work of women who photograph the coast, women whose images are shaped by tide, weather, solitude and persistence, yet who are often under‑represented in mainstream photography spaces.
Having our community showcased at The Photography Show has done more than display images. It has created visibility that many of our members have never experienced before. For those whose images were featured, it has been a powerful confidence boost. It was also a real highlight to meet some of our members in person at the show putting faces to names and sharing that same enthusiasm for coastal photography together.

PermaJet & NiSi’s ongoing support has helped us bring women’s coastal photography into the spotlight, celebrating the depth of talent within our group. Together, these partnerships are helping build a culture where women feel seen, valued and encouraged to keep creating.
Why this is important – Women in the photography industry are still underrepresented. Community groups that showcase the talent of female photographers are growing, and there’s a real momentum building, one we’re proud to be part of. The more women who get involved, discover a passion for photography and support one another, the more the balance will continue to shift. We’ve always been strong advocates for women in photography, speaking on various podcasts and presenting a webinar with SheClicks to encourage others. Raising the visibility of female photographers and celebrating their incredible talent is something we care deeply about. It’s genuinely inspiring to see the diverse range of work shared with us each day, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with women from around the world who share the same passion.
