Photograph the wild, beautiful and stunning coastline of the Outer Hebrides with three working photographers.

Based on the Isle of Harris, this workshop explores seascape photography, coastal landscapes and the unique winter light that defines the Scottish islands.

Photographing the Isle of Lewis and Harris

Join photographers Adele Warner‑Tate, Max Warner‑Tate and Margaret Soraya for a landscape photography workshop on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. The workshop focuses on the Atlantic coastline, long‑exposure seascapes, winter light and the details that shape island life. Harris provides an extraordinary range of photographic subjects, from the wide beaches of the west coast to the rugged, rock‑lined shores of the east.

February brings dramatic skies, Atlantic swells and the winter light the Outer Hebrides are known for. You’ll be joined by three experienced photographers throughout the week, each with their own approach and deep familiarity with the landscapes of Harris and Lewis.

The week includes time at The Galerie on the east coast of Harris, Margaret’s gallery and exhibition space, and a visit to Adele and Max’s gallery in Stornoway on Lewis. Two working artists’ spaces, each offering a different view of the islands.

6 nights / 5 days based at The Harris Hotel, Tarbert

Included: Complimentary transport, lunches, outdoor excursions, and indoor teaching sessions.
Not included: Accommodation, Travel to Harris, Insurance, Evening meals & alcohol. (Rooms have been held at the Hotel for you to book in and pay separately from the workshop fee)

Your Photography Workshop Leaders

Adele Warner‑Tate, photography workshop leader based in Harris and Lewis, Outer Hebrides

Adele Warner Tate a landscape and seascape photographer based on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.

Her work is rooted in the coastline of Harris and Lewis. She is known for photographing in all conditions, capturing the mood and energy of the Hebridean coast as storms build and light breaks through.

Adele is a NiSi Filters and PermaJet Brand Ambassador. Her seascape photography has been recognised nationally and is shown in her own gallery in Stornoway, Lewis.

Adele will be leading sessions throughout the week alongside Margaret and Max.

Margaret Soraya, photographer involved in residential workshops across Harris and Lewis

Based on the east coast of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, Margaret Soraya has been photographing this coastline for over sixteen years and has lived on the island since 2022. Her work centres on the Hebridean landscape, and in particular the Atlantic seascape, which she photographs using long exposure techniques to create quiet, minimal images of the wild coast.

Margaret has exhibited her work in three solo shows and published several books of Hebridean photography. Her gallery, The Galerie, is built at her home in Geocrab and shows her prints, books and original work. The group will spend time there during the week.

She has been leading photography workshops on Harris since 2018, with an extensive knowledge of the island's locations, coastal access, tides and seasonal light.

Max Warner‑Tate, photography workshop leader based in Harris and Lewis, Outer Hebrides

Max Warner Tate is a photographer based on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, specialising in drone, underwater and still photography. Her work captures the coastline of Harris and Lewis from perspectives that reveal scale, movement and the character of the islands, shaped by years of exploring the beaches, inlets and open water of the Hebridean coast.

Max is a NiSi UK Brand Ambassador. She runs and shows her work in the Warner Tate gallery in Stornoway, Lewis

Max will be leading sessions throughout the week alongside Margaret and Adele.

What you will learn through this

Landscape Photography Workshop

  • Seascape and coastal landscape photography

  • Long exposure photography techniques

  • Photographing island details, abstract, textures and light

  • Post-processing editing & discussion

  • Developing your own photographic style

The Outer Hebrides is one of the most remote and dramatic photography locations in Scotland. Margaret has photographed the Isle of Harris for over sixteen years and has lived there since 2022. Adele and Max Warner‑Tate are based on the Isle of Lewis and know both islands exceptionally well. That level of local knowledge is invaluable on an Outer Hebrides group photography workshop.

Winter on Harris is exceptional for photography. The weather is fast‑changing, with dramatic skies, Atlantic swells, rainbows and low winter light often appearing within the same day. February is one of the quietest months in the Outer Hebrides, and you’ll frequently have whole beaches to yourselves.

Beyond the dramatic seascapes, Harris offers countless smaller subjects — rock textures, abstract sand patterns, moving water and the quieter details of island life that make strong photographic interest.

Each day is guided by the weather and conditions. Margaret, Adele and Max use their knowledge of sea state, wind and tides to pick the right locations, and will share that knowledge with the group. If the weather closes in, the focus moves indoors for editing, image review and conversation.

A typical day on the photography workshop

  • Each day is guided by the weather and conditions. Light and sea state can change quickly in the Outer Hebrides, so the plan remains flexible. You’ll usually be collected from the Harris Hotel at around 8.30am, after breakfast.

  • The morning is spent out shooting. Drawing on their knowledge of tides, access points and coastal conditions, Margaret, Adele and Max select the best location for the day. Lunch and the afternoon session are planned around the latest forecasts.

  • Most days include group discussion and short talks to support your photographic thinking. You’re welcome to share your own work with the group if you’d like.

  • You’ll return to the hotel after the final shooting session. Evenings are your own, with the option of joining the group for dinner. The first evening begins with a welcome dinner together.

  • Where time allows, the week may also include visits to local artists and makers.
